The Austrian Vignette in 2025

Before driving in Austria, you'll want to make sure you have an Austrian vignette, which has been mandatory since 1997 for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tons. Originally, it was only available as a physical adhesive sticker, however, a digital vignette has been available since 2017.

The Austrian motorway vignette is electronically linked to your vehicle's license plate. The vignette can be purchased online at Tollwayr using all major payment methods, such as PayPal and credit cards.

Be aware that E-vignettes for Austria are always issued and sent by ASFINAG. Tollwayr is simply an intermediary and is not affiliated with Asfinag. To ensure compliance while avoiding a potentially significant fine, read on to find out more about Austrian vignettes.

The Austrian E-vignette

Austria road tolls are paid by using a vignette. In Austria, both the electronic vignette and a physical sticker are available. You don't have to have both, just one or the other, but the e-vignette for Austria is the most convenient for multiple reasons:

  • There's no need to wait for a sticker to arrive in the mail, you'll receive your e-vignette almost instantly.
  • You won't have to stick anything onto your vehicle's windshield or scratch an old sticker off. If your windshield has to be replaced, you won't have to get a new sticker.
  • The digital vignette is linked to your license plate number, which means holders of transferable plates don't need a separate toll sticker for each vehicle. A single digital vignette can be used for up to three vehicles.

Ordering the Austrian e-vignette is easy by registering online at Tollwayr, requiring only a few steps to purchase. Be aware that Tollwayr does not sell or issue the vignette. We simply assist people in registering their vignettes in the ASFINAG system. ASFINAG will issue the vignette, delivering it to your e-mail inbox almost instantly.

Toll Regulations and Road Network Coverage

All motorways (autobahn) and expressways (also known as "S" roads) in Austria are subject to tolls. Every vehicle with a technically permissible maximum weight of up to 3.5 tons, such as motorcycles and passenger cars, must have a vignette. If you don't have a valid vignette, you may face fines of at least €120.

Austrian Motorway Vignette Exemptions

Previously, Austria required toll collection on its motorway and expressway network without exception. As of December 15, 2019, some exceptions to that rule were added. The legal foundation for this change is in the Federal Roads Toll Act (Bundesstraßenmautgesetz). The latest update on this act was on April 23, 2024. Currently, these four specific sections of motorway in Austria are exempt from the vignette requirement:

  • A1 West Motorway: From the Walserberg border crossing to Salzburg-Nord, Salzburg Province.
  • A12 Inntal Motorway: From the Kiefersfelden border crossing to Kufstein-Süd, Tyrol.
  • A14 Motorway: From the Hörbranz border crossing to Hohenems, Vorarlberg. Vignette exemption applies from the south or junction 23 Hohenems Diepoldsau.
  • A26 Linz Motorway: Currently under construction, including the new Danube suspension bridge, Upper Austria. A digital vignette will be required upon completion and connection to the A7 motorway.

Austrian Tollroads

Vignettes have been compulsory on most motorways and expressways in Austria since 1997. There are also sondermautstrecken which refers to the six sections of Austrian highways that require an additional toll that can be paid at toll booths or with a special “videomaut vignette”. These include:

  • A9 Pyhrn motorway (Bosruck tunnel)
  • A9 Pyhrn motorway (Gleinalm tunnel)
  • A10 Tauern motorway (Tauern-Katschberg)
  • A11 Karawanks motorway (Karawanks tunnel)
  • A13 Brenner motorway (Gleinalm tunnel)
  • 16 Arlberg expressway (Arlberg tunnel)

Save travel time easily by purchasing a Digital Section Toll Ticket for the six sections online. This allows you to pass through the six toll stations without stopping. The benefits are clear: no stops, no searching for loose change, just a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Categories for the Austrian E Vignette

In Austria, the vignette regulations are divided into two categories:

  • Motorcycles
  • Light vehicles under 3.5 tons

There is no need to have a vignette for trailers or caravans.

Go Toll for Busses and Heavy Vehicles

Vehicles with a permissible maximum weight that exceeds 3.5 tons such as heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), busses, and heavier mobile homes, must pay a mileage-based toll for using Austrian motorways and expressways. These tolls are paid by using what's referred to as a GO-Box.

You will need to purchase a GO-Box which is an electronic device fitted to your vehicle, also called an on-board unit (OBU). It uses microwave technology to communicate with mounted toll readers along the roadways, automatically ensuring toll payment. The GO-Box is available at many petrol stations and other GO-Box partners throughout Austria, with a full list of sales outlets found here.

RECENT CHANGES: Be aware that there were some recent changes to this tolling system effective as of January 1, 2024. An amendment to the Federal Road Toll Act and the ASFINAG Act officially implemented the new EU Road Charging Directive. Now, in addition to traffic-related costs and infrastructure costs due to noise and air pollution, vehicles' CO₂ emissions are also covered by the toll. This applies to vehicles that exceed 3.5 tons of technically permissible total mass and is being introduced in stages from 2024 through 2026.
NOTE: Those who drive on Austria's toll roads without having made the payment will be given the opportunity to pay the toll within five hours and 100 kilometers at a GO point of sale. An incorrectly stated number of axles can be paid at an active GO-Box but it must be done within 96 hours. If you do not pay this charge retrospectively, a replacement toll will be due. If the balance on your GO-Box is too low, or if there is no active GO-Box at all, there is a fine of approximately €246. If the number of axles stated is too low, the fine is about €123. If the replacement toll isn't paid there will be additional administrative fines, starting at approximately €307.

Fines and Compliance

Motorists are solely responsible for having a vignette when using the toll sections of Austrian motorways. Those who do not have a valid vignette are held accountable through video recordings. The correct use of vignettes in Austria is controlled through the use of camera surveillance and manual checks on the country's motorways that are subject to tolls. Be aware that mobile control systems regularly change their locations. These portable devices are placed in various locations at least every two weeks while examination of recordings occurs at the ASFINAG headquarters. They can automatically see whether a vehicle is correctly registered in the central database.

If you fail to pay the replacement toll, hefty administration fees are added by our friends at ASFINAG. They range from €307 to as much as €3,067.

Avoid a potentially significant fine by:

  • Purchasing a vignette before driving on a toll road.
  • Double-check the information on your vignette to ensure it is correct.

Errors that Can Result in Fines

In addition to not having a vignette, there are errors that can result in fines you should be aware of:

  • Mistakes in the license plate number
  • Choosing the wrong country where your vehicle is registered
  • Choosing the wrong vehicle type
  • Entering the environmental zone with a different car from the one that has the vignette
  • Incorrect dates

Tips for International Travelers

  • Our No. 1 tip: Before you travel to Austria, it is important that you purchase your vignette. You don't want to accidentally drive on a road that requires a vignette and end up with a big fine. For a journey that's as smooth and as hassle-free as possible, heed the tips that follow as well.
  • Remember that some roads and tunnels in Austria require an additional vignette. Be sure to check your route carefully to see whether you'll be traveling these roads and if so, buy a vignette for them.
  • Refer to our news/blog section that we include for the latest news.
  • The Südosttangente is the busiest road in the Vienna capital, with 210,000 motor vehicles traversing it daily. One of the most scenic, often referred to as the best for breathtaking high mountain pass scenery, is the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, featuring 36 hairpin turns. It stretches for 30 miles (48km) from Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße, Salzburg to Heiligenblut am Großglockner, Carinthia.
  • Mobile phones can only be used with a hands-free car kit.
  • If you drive in Austria, do not drive under the influence of alcohol. With the maximum permissible blood alcohol level for driving at just 0.05‰, even one alcoholic drink can put you over the limit. Penalties are severe and not only include large fines but potentially the loss of your driving license or even jail.
