The Bulgarian vignette and toll system were revised in 2019. Drivers were once sent a vignette by mail in the form of a sticker that had to be placed on the windshield of the vehicle. That was fully phased out with sales of online e-vignettes starting in December 2018 and becoming valid in January 2019. There is no longer a need to stick anything on your car window or to wait to receive documents by mail. The vignettes are now purchased and received online. All drivers have to do is register online at Tollwayr.com and the vignette will be issued within minutes.
The introduction of the electronic BGTOLL system made things much more convenient, simplifying the system for all. We've been assisting clients with their e-vignette purchases since 2019 (and purchases of Bulgaria's adhesive toll system stickers long before) which means we have the experience and expertise to ensure your experience with electronic vignettes is smooth and hassle-free.

The Bulgarian e-vignette is available for the following vehicles.
Vehicle category | Description |
---|---|
Light vehicles under 3.5 T | The Bulgarian e-vignette for light vehicles is needed for all vehicles with a maximum technically permissible laden weight of 3.5 tons, including cars and caravans. Vehicles with fewer than four tires, such as motorcycles and trikes, do not need a vignette. |
For trailers of light vehicles (GCWR of vehicle train > 3.5 t) | Covers light trailers for cars when the total laden weight, along with the towing vehicle, surpasses 3.5 tons. |
Note, as the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works reports, as of February 13, 2024, all motorhomes regardless of total technically permissible maximum weight, must pay for an electronic vignette. Until that point, M1 camping vehicles that weighed less than 3.5 tonnes had to have a vignette while those over 3.5 tonnes were required to pay separate motorway fees. An e-vignette is now required for motorhomes no matter what their total technically permissible maximum weight.
As of March 1, 2020, vehicles without trailers that exceed the maximum permissible weight of 3.5 tonnes must pay a route-dependent toll. We'll explain more below.
Heavy goods vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes require a "route pass" as noted above. This is calculated based on the distance driven (determined by a GPS tracker), the category of the vehicle (bus or lorry), the number of axles, gross weight, and euro emission class.
If your car + trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes an additional vignette will be needed for the trailer. The cost ranges from £3.92 for the car and £3.92 for the trailer (£7.84 total) for a weekend to £37.89 for the car and £37.89 for the trailer (£75.78 total).
In Bulgaria, a vignette is required to drive on all motorways and national roads. That means all motor vehicles other than motorbikes are subject to the country's vignette regulations. Bulgarian motorway taxes are charged for first-class roads and motorways, covering 3,115 km (1,935 miles) of around 20,000 km (12,427 miles).
This includes the following:
There are exemptions from the Bulgaria vignette rule. As defined in the official Roads Act, the following vehicles are exempted from tolls, including:
Bulgaria shares its borders with Romania, Greece, Turkey, North Macedonia and Serbia. If you plan to drive roads in any of these countries, be aware that all aim to have these user-friendly, reliable, and cost-efficient toll systems in place.
Below you find an interactive map with all Bulgarian motorways where tolls are charged.

After purchasing your vignette, you can always check its validity by using our online tool, whether purchased online or from a vending machine.
Anyone driving without a valid e-vignette in Bulgaria is risking significant fines. Control methods are in place to ensure compliance, including cameras, police, and border checks. The national roads and motorways are monitored around the clock and they can automatically see whether the vehicle is registered correctly in the central database. The vehicle registration number will be checked against the National Toll Administration's vignette register.
To avoid potential problems and heavy fines, we highly advise purchasing a vignette for the appropriate duration of your trip and vehicle category before setting off. It's always a good idea to check the validity of your e-vignette before and after purchasing so that you'll have time to act if there are any issues.
Fines can be assessed for:
If you drive your vehicle on Bulgaria's toll roads without a valid vignette and are caught (which is highly likely), you will have to pay a fine that ranges from approximately £130 (Fr XXX) to £865 (Fr XXX). First time offenders may be offered to make a compensation payment of roughly £31 (Fr XXX) to purchase a valid vignette that same day, although vehicles exceeding a total of 3.5 tonnes may be subject to fees of as much as £865 (Fr XXX).
Before visiting Bulgaria, it's a must to purchase the e-vignette you need. Otherwise, you might accidentally wind up driving on a road that requires a vignette and get fined. If you plan to rent a car, most rental cars will already have one but be sure to check before you hit the road. There are a few other things you should be aware of as well, such as:
