The Hungarian e-vignette has been available since 2008. The online E vignette Hungary is also known as the "E-matrica" and is digitally linked to your vehicle's license plate. Be aware that it is required for motorcycles, passenger cars, campers, trailers, and other types of vehicles for driving on most roadways and national roads. You can buy your Hungarian vignette online at Tollwayr and the registration confirmation will instantly be sent to your email. Payment for your purchase can be done by credit card, PayPal, and Apple Pay, among other options, making it quick and easy to accomplish.
If you drive in Hungary without a vignette you can face significant fines which can amount to hundreds of euros.
The E vignette was officially introduced in 2007 and launched on January 1, 2008. The digital vignette for Hungary replaced the adhesive sticker which has been fully phased out. As it is electronic, there's no need to stick anything on your vehicle's window or wait for a physical sticker to arrive in the mail.
All you have to do is register online at Tollwayr.com and your vignette will be issued within minutes, and delivered right to your email inbox. As mentioned, it is necessary for motorcycles, passenger cars, campers, trailers, and other types of vehicles when driving on Hungary's freeways and expressways which are marked with an M. Heavier vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons will need to pay a route-dependent e-toll using a HU-GO box. We’ve created a comprehensive overview of all the Hungarian vignette categories for you below.
Category | Vignette Price | Buy vignette |
---|---|---|
D1 | Vehicles designed to transport up to 7 passengers, including any tow. | |
D1M | Motorcycles | |
D2 | Vehicles designed to transport more than 7 passengers, light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons, and mobile homes. | |
U | Trailers towed by vehicles categorized under D2 and B2. |
Through 2023, buses and coaches that were classified as heavy-duty vehicles also required an e-vignette. The plan was to change this based on the distance traveled via the E Toll Symst, Pursuant to Act LXVII of 2013, starting February 1, 2024. However, the integration took longer than expected, and was ultimately postponed for two months. From April 1, 2024, buses with a maximum authorized total mass of more than 3.5 tons must pay tolls for road use based on the new, specific regulation in the distance-based toll system.
For heavier vehicles, the so-called “e-toll," toll charge is based on the type of vehicle and the distance driven on Hungarian roads. Those types of vehicles, including the earlier mentioned buses and coaches, require an onboard unit referred to as the HU-GO system. This was introduced in 2013 on 6500 kilometres of Hungarian roads as the National Toll Payment Services notes.
These vehicles are subdivided into three categories (J2, J3 and J4) which are based on the number of axles. The system fully complies with the European Electronic Toll Service (EEETS). You'll find all recent updates and other details about the system here. Determining your toll is easy with the toll calculator.
As noted, there are a total of 6,500 kilometres of roadways in the Hungarian public road network, including motorways, highways, and main routes. The rate of distance-based toll payment depends on the type of road used, the category of the motor vehicle, and its environmental classification. The system complies with the European Union requirements and the directives of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) and Act LXVII of 2013.
All toll expressways and motorways are designated with the "M" or e-Matrica. A valid e-vignette for Hungary is required for all of the following motorways in the country:

If you drive just three to four days without having the e-vignette Hungary, you will need to pay three to four times the 70 euro amount.
