Vignette Slovakia

Tolls for driving on Slovakian motorways and expressways are paid by purchasing a digital Slovakia vignette which is issued by the Eznamka tolling system. While it was originally a physical sticker that had to be placed on your vehicle's window with compliance done via visual checks, today, the vignette is electronic and is known as the vignette SK. Since the 1st of December, 2015, it has been mandatory to have an e-vignette in Slovakia. It is digitally linked to your license plate number which is registered in the Slovak Republic database.

The Slovak E-vignette

On 1 December 2015, the Slovakian e vignette was commissioned. The system was built and is maintained by Skytoll which took less than three months to get the system fully operational. Slovakia's toll system is time-based (10-, 30-, 365-day, or 1-year) rather than based on distances driven, with the vignette requirement applying to all vehicles that weigh less than 3.5 tonnes. Once issued, proof of the registration will be in the database of “Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, the Slovakian government body responsible for the toll collection.

Heavier vehicles above 3.5 tonnes will need to make toll payments based on distance, per km, using an onboard unit. It is mandatory to have a Slovak e-vignette when driving on all motorways and expressways.

Having assisted clients with their Slovakia e-vignette purchases since 2019, we are a trusted authority with in-depth knowledge of the toll roads and vignette rules in Slovakia.

Fines and compliance

The enforcement of obligations for vehicles and drivers is pursuant to Act No. 488/2013 Coll. on Vignette, with vignette payments carried out by the Vignette Payment Collection Administrator. If you drive without having a valid e-vignette for the dates that you are traveling on Slovakian roads, you will be risking significant fines. We highly recommend purchasing a vignette for your category vehicle before setting out as compliance is checked through video surveillance, police controls, and border officers.

The bottom line:
  • Buy a vignette before you travel at Tollwayr
  • Double-check the information on your vignette to ensure everything matches, including the license plate number and the duration

Fines For Driving with No Vignette

If you drive on Slovak roads without a (valid) vignette and you are caught (and you probably will be), you can face hefty fines.

  • Fine on site: If the police see you driving without a vignette, they may detain and immediately fine you as much as 150 euros.
  • Administrative fine: If you drive by a traffic surveillance camera without a valid vignette, you will also be fined up to 300 euros.

To avoid these unpleasant financial surprises, it is very important to purchase an e-vignette before you go to Slovakia.

Slovak Vignette Exemption

There are some exemptions to the mandatory vignette rule, including:
  • A driver who holds a parking pass for the severely disabled
  • Vehicles that are used to perform non-profit social services
  • Historic vehicles

The entire list of exempt vehicles can be found here.
