Slovenia Vignette

The Slovenia vignette has been mandatory to have when driving vehicles on the country's motorways and expressways since 1 July 2008. Originally, it was a physical sticker adhered to the window of your vehicle. In 2021 Slovenia switched to electronic vignettes, or e-vignettes, which are issued by Dars. The physical sticker has been entirely replaced by the digital vignette and is no longer in use. It is linked to the registration number of your vehicle.

The official vignette can be purchased online at Tollwayr and can be paid using all major online payment methods, including credit cards and PayPal. Don't drive on Slovenian toll roads without an e-vignette as you could face a significant fine. To learn more about how they work and how to buy a Slovenia vignette, read on.

Toll Regulations and Road Network Coverage

Toll charges in Slovenia are collected through the digital vignette, also called an “E-Vinjeta”, via the Dars payment system. By decree of the Republic of Slovenia government, motor vehicles that weigh 3,500 kg or less fall within the electronic vignette system, while those exceeding 3,500 kg must pay their tolls using the DarsGO electronic system that requires an onboard unit.

The major roads and highways to which the digital vignette, or E-vinjeta, applies include the following:

  • A1: Štajerska-Primorska motorway Šentilj – Maribor – Celje – Ljubljana – Postojna – Koper
  • A2: Upper Carniola-Lower Carniola motorway Karawanks Tunnel (special toll) – Kranj – Ljubljana – Novo mesto – Brežice – Obrežje
  • A3: Sežana motorway Divača – Fernetiči
  • A4: Podravska motorway Slivnica – Hajdina – Draženci – Gruškovje
  • A5: Pomurska motorway Dragučova A1 – Beltinci – Murska Sobota – Pince

Regional roads in Slovenia are exempt from the vignette obligation. Additionally, the A2 motorway from Rosenbach (Austria) to Hrušica (Slovenia) is paid using the Karawanks Tunnel. The route from Slovenia to Austria (Northbound) cannot be paid in advance. You need to pay by card or with cash at the toll stations.

Exemptions From Toll Payment

According to the Road Tolling Act, some types of vehicles and/or the type of transport they provide are exempt from toll payments. These vehicles do not require an e-vignette but must still be registered in the system before using a toll road in Slovenia. Toll payments are not required for:

  • Vehicles that are used to perform humanitarian aid tasks for those affected in peace or war, due to armed conflicts, natural and other disasters
  • Vehicles with priority and escort vehicles, including the escorted vehicles
  • Military vehicles of the Slovenian Armed Forces
  • Foreign military vehicles used on national defense missions, for transporting international peacekeeping forces, and in the performance of other security and defense tasks when determined by international treaties
  • Transport with vehicles the toll road operator uses to perform toll activities and the performance of maintenance tasks

The Slovenian E-vignette

As mentioned, purchasing an electronic vignette is mandatory for vehicles with a maximum permitted weight of up to 3,500 kg to use toll roads. You do not need an additional vignette for your trailer, only for the towing vehicle. All expressways and motorways are subject to tolls for a specified period of use.

Originally available as a physical adhesive sticker, Slovenia transitioned to a digital vignette for multiple reasons: it's more easily enforced, more efficient, and more sustainable. There's no need to stick anything onto the window and worry about damage rendering it invalid. As it is an online vignette, you don't have to wait for a sticker to arrive in the mail either.

On the border of Slovenia and Austria you will encounter the Karawankentunnel. You cannot pay the toll from the Slovenian side driving North electronically unfortunately. You need to pay by card or cash at the toll gate. When travelling to or through Austria, you need both a Slovenian and an Austrian e-vignette. Driving from Austria to Slovenia is the responsibility of the Austrian ASFINAG. The vignette from Austria to Slovenia can, however, be purchased online.

All you have to do is register your Slovenian e vignette online at Tollwayr.com and it will be issued within minutes, and delivered right to your email inbox. We've been selling e vignettes for years, not only for Slovenia but for many other countries.

Categories of vignettes in Slovenia

There are several vehicle categories you can choose from when purchasing your vignette. It's important to make the correct selection. If you are unsure about the vehicle category, you can use our custom-made tool to make the determination.

The Slovenian e-vignette is available for:

Vehicle category Description Buy vignette
Motorcycles, Toll class 1 Single-track motor vehicles include all vehicles with a track width not exceeding 50 cm. These vehicles fall under toll class 1.
Passenger cars, minivans, off-road vehicles, SUVs and pick-ups, Toll class 2A Vehicles with a maximum authorized weight of up to 3.5 T (3,500 kg) and a height above the front axle of up to 1.3 meters fall under toll class 2A.

Requirements for trailers & vehicles heavier than 3.5 T

The toll rate for vehicles with a maximum permitted weight that exceeds 3,500 kg (3.5 T), irrespective of the maximum weight of any trailers, is set based on the distance traveled. These vehicles, such as a goods vehicle or bus, fall into toll classes 3 and 4 and are required to use the DarsGo system.

These tolls are paid through the electronic DarsGo system with the electronic toll tag available at DarsGo service points, many of which are listed on the official Dars website.

Validity Periods and Prices in 2024

Prices for 2024 were set on 15 June 2023 when the Slovenian government issued a decree increasing the prices of its e vignettes. They are available in various validity periods for which you'll select based on the duration of your trip:

  • Annual e-vignette for Slovenia
  • Monthly e-vignette for Slovenia
  • Weekly e-vignette for Slovenia
  • Semi-annual e-vignette (This is only for motorbikes, as motorbikes do not have the option for monthly e-vignettes)
As of 24 June 2024 there are no plans to issue a 1-day vignette for Slovenia.

Fines and Compliance

The correct use of e-vignettes in Slovenia is controlled by the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia (DARS), the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Slovenian police. On the country's motorway network, there are surveillance cameras at control points and toll control vehicles to ensure compliance.

When the system checks the vehicle to determine whether there is a valid e-vignette and non-compliance is detected, it is a violation of the Road Tolling Act which incurs a 300 EUR fine (XXXX GPB).

If the toll payer transfers the vehicle registration plate associated with the e-vignette to a different vehicle, or to a vehicle that isn't in the same toll class as the vehicle from which the registration plate was taken, the fine is even larger at 500 EUR (XXXX GBP).

To avoid the fine, ensure that you do the following:
  • Purchase an e-vignette before driving on any toll roads in Slovenia
  • Double-check the information on your vignette, including the category, validity period, and license plate number before submitting your order

Common Issues That Can Result in Fines

There are multiple issues that can result in a fine, in addition to failing to purchase an e-vignette altogether, including:

  • Errors in one's license plate number
  • Selecting the wrong vehicle type
  • Entering the toll zone with a different vehicle than the one bearing the vignette
  • Incorrect validity dates

Tips for International Travelers

Exploring Slovenia as an international visitor is made easier with the freedom of driving, but to ensure a seamless journey, follow these important tips.

  • Before you enter Slovenia, purchase an electronic vignette. If you accidentally drive on a road that requires one, chances are, you will end up paying a hefty fine.
  • When buying your Slovenia e-vignette, avoid common mistakes by paying close attention to each selection, from entering the vehicle license plate number and choosing the appropriate category to selecting the correct validity period. Ensure you receive an email confirmation of your purchase.
  • Refer to our news/blog section for the latest information on driving and vignettes in Slovenia.
  • The main highways in Slovenia are the A1 and A2, similar to motorways in the U.K., running between Ljubljana, Piran, and Bled. The E1 will bring you along the most famous mountain pass, and the highest, connecting Gorenjska and Primorska, winding through the heart of the Julian Alps with breathtaking views.
  • Be aware that dipped headlights (low-beam) are mandatory even in the daytime.
  • As the maximum permitted blood alcohol level for drivers is just .5 parts per thousand and breath tests are common when pulled over, it's best to not drink anything at all before driving in Slovenia.
