The Slovenia vignette has been mandatory to have when driving vehicles on the country's motorways and expressways since 1 July 2008. Originally, it was a physical sticker adhered to the window of your vehicle. In 2021 Slovenia switched to electronic vignettes, or e-vignettes, which are issued by Dars. The physical sticker has been entirely replaced by the digital vignette and is no longer in use. It is linked to the registration number of your vehicle.
The official vignette can be purchased online at Tollwayr and can be paid using all major online payment methods, including credit cards and PayPal. Don't drive on Slovenian toll roads without an e-vignette as you could face a significant fine. To learn more about how they work and how to buy a Slovenia vignette, read on.
Toll charges in Slovenia are collected through the digital vignette, also called an “E-Vinjeta”, via the Dars payment system. By decree of the Republic of Slovenia government, motor vehicles that weigh 3,500 kg or less fall within the electronic vignette system, while those exceeding 3,500 kg must pay their tolls using the DarsGO electronic system that requires an onboard unit.
The major roads and highways to which the digital vignette, or E-vinjeta, applies include the following:
Regional roads in Slovenia are exempt from the vignette obligation. Additionally, the A2 motorway from Rosenbach (Austria) to Hrušica (Slovenia) is paid using the Karawanks Tunnel. The route from Slovenia to Austria (Northbound) cannot be paid in advance. You need to pay by card or with cash at the toll stations.
According to the Road Tolling Act, some types of vehicles and/or the type of transport they provide are exempt from toll payments. These vehicles do not require an e-vignette but must still be registered in the system before using a toll road in Slovenia. Toll payments are not required for:
As mentioned, purchasing an electronic vignette is mandatory for vehicles with a maximum permitted weight of up to 3,500 kg to use toll roads. You do not need an additional vignette for your trailer, only for the towing vehicle. All expressways and motorways are subject to tolls for a specified period of use.
Originally available as a physical adhesive sticker, Slovenia transitioned to a digital vignette for multiple reasons: it's more easily enforced, more efficient, and more sustainable. There's no need to stick anything onto the window and worry about damage rendering it invalid. As it is an online vignette, you don't have to wait for a sticker to arrive in the mail either.
On the border of Slovenia and Austria you will encounter the Karawankentunnel. You cannot pay the toll from the Slovenian side driving North electronically unfortunately. You need to pay by card or cash at the toll gate. When travelling to or through Austria, you need both a Slovenian and an Austrian e-vignette. Driving from Austria to Slovenia is the responsibility of the Austrian ASFINAG. The vignette from Austria to Slovenia can, however, be purchased online.
All you have to do is register your Slovenian e vignette online at Tollwayr.com and it will be issued within minutes, and delivered right to your email inbox. We've been selling e vignettes for years, not only for Slovenia but for many other countries.
There are several vehicle categories you can choose from when purchasing your vignette. It's important to make the correct selection. If you are unsure about the vehicle category, you can use our custom-made tool to make the determination.

The correct use of e-vignettes in Slovenia is controlled by the Motorway Company in the Republic of Slovenia (DARS), the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Slovenian police. On the country's motorway network, there are surveillance cameras at control points and toll control vehicles to ensure compliance.
When the system checks the vehicle to determine whether there is a valid e-vignette and non-compliance is detected, it is a violation of the Road Tolling Act which incurs a 300 EUR fine (XXXX GPB).
If the toll payer transfers the vehicle registration plate associated with the e-vignette to a different vehicle, or to a vehicle that isn't in the same toll class as the vehicle from which the registration plate was taken, the fine is even larger at 500 EUR (XXXX GBP).
To avoid the fine, ensure that you do the following:There are multiple issues that can result in a fine, in addition to failing to purchase an e-vignette altogether, including:
