The Swiss E-vignette became available as of the 1st of August, 2023, providing a digital alternative to the physical sticker. It is mandatory for driving on the national road network, or Nationalstrassennetz, which primarily consists of highways/motorways, but includes some smaller roads as well.

The Swiss E-vignette

As mentioned, the electronic version of the Swiss motorway vignette only became available in August 2023, although the vignette sticker was introduced decades earlier in 1985. The E-vignette is an alternative and does not replace the physical sticker vignette. You can still buy the adhesive sticker in Switzerland and across Europe, but it is much more convenient to purchase the digital vignette online. You'll get it almost instantly when ordering rather than waiting for it to arrive by mail or picking it up in person, and there's no need to stick anything on your vehicle's window.

To buy it online, you simply register at Tollwayr and the vignette will be issued within minutes. To learn more about the Swiss vignette, continue on as we'll discuss it more in depth, from the variations to the validity period.

Toll Regulations in Switzerland

The federal resolution to adopt the Swiss vignette to pay Swiss road fees was approved by vote in February 1984, with the vignettes going into effect the following year. With this, Switzerland became the world's first country to introduce a vignette. As noted, from August 1, 2023, the electronic vignette (e-vignette) was introduced as part of a dual system in addition to the conventional adhesive vignette. This made Switzerland one of the latest European countries to introduce an e-vignette.

At its meeting on June 16, 2023, the Federal Council approved the complete revision of the National Road Charges Ordinance (NSAV) to enable this change. The latest ordinances were updated on May 16, 2024.

When do you need the vignette?

You need a vignette not only for driving on Swiss freeways but also for other national roads. On Swiss freeways and national roads with white-green signage, vehicles up to a maximum permissible weight of 3.5 tons must have a vignette. This regulation applies to cars, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, and campers. If you drive with a car and a trailer/caravan both will need a vignette.

You also need a separate vignette for Great St. Bernard Tunnel and the Munt la Schera Tunnel. Note that you need to have the regular Swiss vignette and that you will have to pay an additional toll for those two tunnels.

For some alpine mountain roads, an additional toll is also required.

Validity Periods and Prices in 2024

There are no daily, weekly, or monthly vignettes available in Switzerland. Neither is there a 10-day vignette for Switzerland. The country offers just one type, the annual vignette. It is valid from the date of purchase through 31 January.

A yearly vignette always runs from 1 December to 31 January, two years after. For example, the vignette for 2024 runs from 1 December 2023 to 31 January 2025. The 2025 vignette will be available from 1 December 2024 and will be valid through 31 January 2026.

Keep in mind that the fees can change as they are set by the Swiss government in November each year.

All of the original prices listed are in Swiss currency which is the Swiss franc (CHF). We have a nearly instant conversion rate tool that updates every second to show the prices in British Pound Sterling (GBP) and Euro (EUR).

Offline Sales Points

In Switzerland, you can buy the sticker vignette at petrol stations, post offices, and customs offices located at border crossings.

You can find some of the offline outlets here on the official Federal Office for Customs and Border Security website.

Do keep in mind that are there several disadvantages to buying offline, including:

  • The queues can be long
  • There are no guarantees that the machines will work
  • There is a greater chance of errors

Your best bet? We advise purchasing your vignette online at Tollwayr.

Validity Check After Purchase

After you purchase your Swiss vignette, you can always check its validity by using our online tool, whether purchased online or from a vending machine.

Please note: This can only be done if you’ve opted for "publicly viewable" during the purchase process. If you purchase from us, we will always enable this option for you.

Toll Regulations For Heavy Vehicles

While it was initially stated that only vehicles up to 3.5 tons needed to pay charges on Swiss roads via vignette, heavier vehicles are also subject to fees. However, instead of requiring a vignette, these larger vehicles must pay a heavy vehicle charge to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG).

This payment can be made through the Via Portal. If you are visiting Switzerland as a tourist, these regulations typically do not apply to you.

Vehicle Loadings

Be aware that in Switzerland you may have to use a train to travel through certain tunnels with your car. Your car will be loaded onto the train and will be taken through those tunnels for you. There are three of these vehicle loading tracks in Switzerland, including:

  • Simplontunnel car loading (at the border between Switzerland and Italy)
  • Lötschbergtunnel
  • Vehicle loading Furka

Fines and compliance

As Swiss legislation requires drivers to have a vignette when driving on Swiss motorways, there are several controls in place to ensure compliance. That includes camera surveillance, and police and border officer checks. They will automatically be able to see if a vehicle is registered correctly in the central database.

To avoid a potentially significant fine for driving without a vignette on Swiss motorways, we highly advise:

  • Purchasing a vignette at Tollwayr before you travel to Switzerland
  • Double checking all information when ordering your vignette

Be aware that If you drive without a vignette on Swiss motorways, you can expect a minimum fine of 200 CHF (about 200 Euros). Additionally, you will be required to purchase a vignette, which costs 40 CHF, bringing the total cost to 240 CHF if you are caught driving without one.

Tips for International Travelers

With such breathtaking scenery, Switzerland has many popular driving routes. Some of the most famously scenic include Furka Pass, Great St. Bernard Pass, St. Gotthard Pass, Bernina Pass, and Simplon Pass. For a smooth and hassle-free trip, heed the following tips:

  • Before you enter Switzerland, make sure you've purchased a vignette. You don't want to accidentally drive on a road that requires one and end up with a big fine.
  • At a traffic light or a road crossing, drivers must switch off their engines to avoid pollution.
  • Stay focused on the road as driving distractions are taken seriously here, including cell phone use and even eating while driving, and can incur big fines.
  • Don't drink and drive. The blood alcohol limit is just 0.05‰ for drivers, and penalties are strict, with a heavy fine or a jail sentence if you are over the limit.
  • If you have an old vignette sticker on your vehicle's window, it must be removed.
  • If you purchase a physical sticker, be sure that it sticks to the window properly and keep an eye out for damage.
